KAGANOF WINS AT FILM FESTIVAL (article first published : 2003-11-11)

South African productions excelled at the recent African and Islands Film Festival, taking both the Fiction and Documentary prizes.

Held on the island of Reunion, the Festival awarded the Documentary prize to Johannesburg film-maker Aryan Kaganof’s WESTERN 4.33, while the Fiction prize went to Zola Maseko’s A Drink in the Passage.

Durban art lovers will remember Aryan Kaganof for his exhibition at the NSA Galleries some months back. WESTERN 4.33 deals with the German concentration camp on Shark Island, near Luderitz, where thousands of indigenous Herero people were incarcerated from 1905 to 1908.

The film has been featured at more than 50 festivals around the world so far, picking up several awards along the way, including top honours at the 12th Festival of African Cinema in Milan, Italy.

Aryan Kaganof, who spent three years working on the film, describes it as "a labour of love, for the desert, and for Africa". Shot on stark black and white Kodak Plus X super 8mm film by Wiro Felix, one of Holland's foremost cinematographers, WESTERN 4.33 has been internationally praised for its powerful visual style, as well as its remarkable sound design by Jane Snijders.
