MONARCH OF THE GLEN: SERIES 1 (article first published : 2003-11-8)

Monarch of The Glen, inspired by the Highland novels of Compton MacKenzie, is a drama series about an extraordinary family in an extraordinary place. It features a bunch of characters likely to make viewers laugh and cry at the same time.

Archie MacDonald is 28 and about to open his trendy new fish restaurant in London with his beautiful girlfriend, Justine. He is an ambitious young man in complete control of his destiny. Suddenly, one phone call threatens to change his life forever.

Archie unexpectedly finds himself the new owner of one of the largest sporting estates in the Highlands. He is a feudal landlord, residing over 40,000 acres of land, 200 tenants, a house which makes the Royal Family’s holiday retreat look like a cottage and with an overdraft to match.

To make matters worse, there are his aged eccentric parents, Hector (Richard Briers - The Good Life) and Molly MacDonald, the feisty local schoolteacher, and the high-spirited cook and housekeeper, Lexie, for Archie to come to grips with.

Monarch of The Glen is presented by BBC Prime on DStv from November 16 at 19h30.
