ER- SEASON 9 (article first published : 2003-10-19)

ER, one of M-Netís long-running and best dramatic series comes back for itís ninth season on October 20 at 19h00.

Combining the extraordinary talents of best-selling author Michael Crichton and Emmy-winning producer John Wells and Emmy nominee Jack Orman, ER explores the inner workings of an urban teaching hospital and the critical issues faced by the dedicated physicians and staff of its overburdened emergency room.

This drama series follows the lives of the emergency room staff and doctors of Chicago's County General Hospital, where the difference between life and death rests on split-second decisions and the pressure, joy and guilt are often overwhelming. The hospital staff is led by Chief Resident John Carter (Noah Wyle) who, after eight years at County, has risen to a role of respect and moral leadership in the ER. Carter has survived the trials and tribulations associated with becoming a full-fledged doctor, and the intense scrutiny of his superiors including his stormy family life and ongoing battle with addiction provide even more hurdles in an already complicated life.

Chief of Emergency Medicine Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes) is a tough and determined administrator who finds herself at a personal crossroads, trying to strike a delicate balance between her life as a doctor and the life she now wants as a woman. Having progressed through the ranks in the emergency room, she has made few fans along the way perhaps in part due to her less-than-gracious social skills and penchant for over management. Undaunted by a physical disability that requires her to walk with a crutch, Weaver remains a highly talented physician.

Dr Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) is a gifted British surgeon whoís facing the challenges of serving as associate chief of surgery and raising Ella, her baby daughter, alone following the death of her husband, Dr. Mark Greene. Although no one could truly break through surgeon Dr. Robert Romano (McCrane), Corday forges a steady bond with her acerbic colleague.

Attending physician Dr. Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic) searches for something to fill the void of his lost family and failed relationships. And working side by side with former girlfriend Abby Lockhart (Tierney), a complex and charming nurse, doesn't help the Croatian doctor's emotional situation. Now involved with Carter, Abby continues to face her own demons every day as her family's history of mental illness threatens to engulf her life yet again.

Dr Jing-Mei Chen (Ming-Na) achieved what few others have, coming out on the winning end of an embittered battle of wills with Weaver, who was forced to reinstate her after controversial firing. Having sacrificed so much for her work, she wants to focus more on her personal needs.

Recent additions to the ER include Michael Gallant (Atkins), a quiet, enigmatic fourth-year medical student who is working his way through school on the Army's ticket, and Dr Gregory Pratt (Phifer), a brash intern whose harsh upbringing surfaces in his renegade temperament.

These medical professionals are determined to save lives in a place where nothing is taken for granted and nothing is certain...nothing except that another desperate person will be rushed through the emergency room doors in the next moment, in need of their help. Some will live, and some will die, but the dedication and passion of these healers will endure.
