MAQBOOL FOR VIDEOVISION (article first published : 2003-09-19)

At the recenet Toronto International Film Festival, Anant Singh, Chief Executive of Videovision Entertainment, announced the acquisition of the worldwide distribution rights to Maqbool from Kaleidoscope Entertainment, producers of Bandit Queen.

Maqbool is a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and is set against the backdrop of Bombay’s underworld. The film stars Om Puri (East Is East), Naseeruddin Shah (Monsoon Wedding), Pankaj Kapoor, Tabu and Irfan Khan (The Warrior).

Maqbool (Khan) is the second in command of a gang led by Abbaji (Kapoor) who is an ageing underworld don. Abbaji is highly respected and revered by his entire gang but love that betrays him. His young mistress (Tabu) finds the majestic Maqbool more charming and decides to use the ambitious young gangster to get rid of her paramour. The film is directed by Vishal Bharadwaj.

Singh and associate Nilesh Singh travelled to India to watch Maqbool in April and were impressed with the film. “Maqbool is a powerful account of love and betrayal,” said Anant Singh. “The unique setting of Shakespeare’s classic in the Bombay underworld has given us a distinctive film with universal appeal. We are delighted with the way the film has turned out. We have been distributing Bollywood movies in South Africa for over fifteen years and we have been looking for an Indian film to launch internationally and we feel that Maqbool has great potential. We will be releasing the film in South Africa in June 2004,” continued Anant Singh.

Headed by producer Bobby Bedi, Kaleidoscope Entertainment is an internationally renowned film and television production company, having produced many critically acclaimed films, including Bandit Queen, Fire, Electric Moon and Saathiya. Kaleidoscope Entertainment is currently in production with The Rising which stars Aishwariya Rai (Devdas) and Aamir Khan (Lagaan).

“I believe that Maqbool is so well rooted in its subject matter that it is the same calibre as Bandit Queen. The film features a formidable line-up of Indian stars and showcases some of the country’s best acting talent,” commented Bobby Bedi. “My association with Anant Singh and Videovision Entertainment began in 1994 when we took Bandit Queen to Cannes. Since then Anant and I have been keen to work together to take Indian cinema to international audiences and I am confident that Anant and Videovision Entertainment will do a fine job with the international distribution of Maqbool.”
