BBC WORLD TALKING MOVIES (article first published : 2003-09-14)

This week's Talking Movies on BBC World on DStv comes from Toronto, with all the glitz, glamour and big name stars at the city's 28th annual International Film Festival.

Presenter Tom Brook reviews the high-profile releases of the festival programme. He speaks at length with Sir Anthony Hopkins about his forthcoming picture The Human Stain which also stars Nicole Kidman. Tom also interviews Denzel Washington as well - his latest film is the murder thriller Out Of Time.

British talent was out in force at the nightly red carpet galas and the new romantic comedy from the writer and director Richard Curtis, Love Actually, created a buzz after screening as a work-in-progress. Laura Metzger highlights two other British productions making an impact in Toronto - Stephen Fry's directorial debut, Bright Young Things and the docu-drama Touching The Void by the Oscar-winning film maker Kevin MacDonald.

Directors Jane Campion (The Piano) and Robert Altman (Gosford Park) discuss their latest movies with Tom. Campion's erotic mystery In The Cut stars Meg Ryan while Altman focuses on the world of ballet in The Company.

Laura also takes a closer look at the festival's It-Girl actress Scarlett Johansson, who has starring roles in two of the more talked-about films in Toronto, Sofia Coppola's Lost In TranslationGirl With The Pearl Earring, starring Colin Firth.

Talking Movies starts on September 16 at 21h30 and is repeated on September 18 at 18h30 GMT, September 19 at 02h30, 09h30 and 15h30, and September 20 at 06h30, 19h30 and 22h30.
