M-NET PREMIERES (article first published : 2003-09-10)

Premiering on the M-Net channel this weekend are Shirley Valentine on September 13 at 23h15 and Beautiful Mind on September 14 at 20h00.

Shirley Valentine is one of the most popular films of recent times starring Pauline Collins, Tom Conti, Julia McKenzie and Alison Steadman. The comedy was directed in 1989 by Lewis Gilbert II. Shirley is a middle-aged Liverpool housewife, who finds herself talking to the wall while she prepares her husband's chip'n'egg, wondering what happened to her life. She compares scenes in her current life with what she used to be like and feels she's stagnated and in a rut. But when her best friend wins an all-expenses-paid vacation to Greece for two, Shirley begins to see the world, and herself, in a different light.

Beautiful Mind is a drama starring Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connolly and Paul Bettany. It was directed in 2001 by Ron Howard. Russell Crowe is a standout in this much-lauded film about professor John Nash, a brilliant Princeton mathematician who triumphed over schizophrenia. The film focuses on Nash’s relationship with his wife Alicia, the numbers breakthrough that resulted in him winning a Nobel Prize, and the delusions that plagued him for most of his life. The film won four Oscars, including one for Jennifer Connelly, who played Alicia Nash.
