STOKVEL (article first published : 2003-07-27)

Former Durban actor James Ngcobo stars in the new SABC2 comedy series Stokvel which is broadcast on Tuesdays from 21h30 to 22h00.

The half-hour series is set in the vibrant and exciting world of stokvels. The stokvel has been a part of African culture for decades – a place where friends meet for companionship, good times and a social way of saving money.

The setting is Diepkloof, Soweto and focuses on a young professional and aspirating couple, Mojo Khumalo and his beautiful wife, Lerata, played by James Ngcobo and Manaka Ranaka. Mojo and Lerata each belong to a stokie – Mojo is the chairman of the men’s stokvel, Majakathata, and Lerata is the treasurer of the women’s society, Sweet Harmony.

Stokvel has been created exclusively for SABC2 by Penguin Films, under the artistic direction of Roberta Durrant and is directed by the acclaimed Vusi Dibakwane.
