THE SUNFLOWER (article first published : 2003-07-27)

While Durban has recently seen its fair share of international commercials and even the odd major Hollywood production (notably I Dreamed of Africa and Stander) passing through, it’s taken a bold move by DuMarc in Association with Movieworld to finally make the rumors a reality.

Described as “magical, mythical, and visually sumptuous”, The Sunflower is produced and directed by Movieworld’s Lance Samuels and DuMarc’s Marc Wells who have taken the courageous step of independently funding, producing and directing the project.

The Sunflower is promoted as a fantasy musical in the style of Moulin Rouge and Little Shop of Horrors. It has been adapted from a children’s story originally written by Marc Wells in the1990’s and features an entirely local cast headed by himself, Hakeem Kae-Azim and Bill Flynn.

The five week shooting schedule takes in locations in Shongweni, 1000 Hills, Stainbank Nature reserve and the du Marc Studio in Springfield Park.
