SUNDAY BLOCKBUSTERS (article first published : 2003-07-4)

M-Netís Sunday Blockbusters programme has a great line-up for July.

In Mr Bones (July 9 at 20h00), Leon Schuster stars as Bones, a young man raised by an Africa chief when he was found in the forest fending off a hungry lion. Later on the tribesmen discovered that the boy also has great skill in divining the future from reading bones- something the tribe considers a greatly respected skill. Henceforth, the boy is dubbed Bones and years later he is ordered by the tribal king Tsonga to seek a previously unknown heir. Bones sets out to locate the heir and when he bumped into a touring golf pro Vince Lee (David Ramsey) he decides that this is the man heís been looking for.

Based on J.K. Rowling's popular children's novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - Harry Potter & The Sorcererís Stone will be screened on July 13 at 20h00 and tells the story of a boy who learns on his 11th birthday that he is the orphaned son of two powerful wizards and possesses unique magical powers of his own. Invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry finds the home and the family he has never had while embarking on the adventure of a lifetime.

In the musical Moulin Rouge (July 20 at 20h00), the idealistic Christian (Ewan McGregor) is drawn into the dark, fantastical underworld of Parisian nightclub, the Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with the club's highest paid star and the city's most famous courtesan, Satin (Nicole Kidman). Co-written, directed and co-produced by internationally renowned Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge is a euphorically high-style vision of a glamorous Underworld, captured for contemporary audiences experiencing parallel loves, deaths and rebirths, new technologies and dance parties.

Training Day (July 27 at 20h00) features Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Scott Glenn and Tom Berenger. In a dramatic departure from his heroic roles, Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington provides a portrait filled with dark humour and emotional dynamism that brings out the good, the bad and the ugly in his character. He plays detective Alonzo in this gritty dramatic movie set in the morally ambiguous world of undercover police work. His eagerness to bust drug dealers even if it meant breaking the law garnered him a 2002 Oscar award.
