LOERIES FOR DISTURBANCE (article first published : 2003-06-25)

Durban-based graphic design and advertising agency, Disturbance Design, walked away with three Gold and two Silver awards at this year¹s prestigious Loerie Award ceremony. Disturbance Design¹s performance this year has put them on top in Durban in terms of creativity amidst stiff competition from bigger advertising agencies.

The Loeries recognise excellence in creativity within the advertising and graphic design industry.

Creative Director and partner Richard Hart attributes the success of Disturbance to the “agency’s continual fresh and distinctive approach to graphic design”. Business partner and sibling Susie Hart adds: “this success is also due to Disturbance Design’s commitment to staying small and focused, at this point employing only six people after seven years in business.”

Disturbance Design was awarded one Gold Loerie for the illustration work on the poster for the 2002 Durban International Film Festival, run by the University of Natal¹s Centre for Creative Arts.

The second and third Gold Loeries honoured the innovative use of typography as interior design at HOME, Durban¹s buzzing new restaurant, gallery and retail outlet on Windermere Road owned by the sibling team. “Every conceivable corner is adorned with typographical tomfoolery, including the lampshades and chairs!” says Richard.

“HOME has allowed us the space to get involved with very exciting and creative non-client work whilst still generating a small profit, this opportunity doesn’t come along very often!” says Susie. The Disturbance Design creative team continually work on product development for Home¹s retail space (The Storeroom), such as clothing, foodstuffs, designer knick-knacks and stationery items.

“Our quirky range of tailored t-shirts with novel prints has gone down very well and we have had quite a few enquiries from other independent retailers looking to carry our growing range of products.” says Richard.
