M-Net is to screen Blood Diamond, a harrowing table about blood diamonds on June 8 at 20h00. Directed in 2006 by Ed Zwick, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Connelly, Djimon Hounsou, Arnold Vosloo A rare pink diamond unites two very different men as they set out to find family and freedom in a blood-soaked Sierra Leone. This harrowing tale about blood diamonds – diamonds used to finance conflicts in Africa – revolves around two characters: diamond smuggler Danny Archer and fisherman Solomon Vandy. Archer and Vandy meet in a Sierra Leone prison at the height of that country’s bloody civil war. When Archer learns that Vandy, who was forced to work in the diamond fields, has found a rare 100 carat pink diamond, he offers to help him find his wife and children in exchange for the gem. Soon Archer is talking to an idealistic American journalist who wants to expose the greed and manipulation of diamond dealers worldwide. What follows is a frantic race to find a fabulous stone, a family, and the funders behind the diamond trade that has cost millions of lives.
