CLIPZ (article first published : 2008-04-28)

After having pushed the boundaries of local content in 2008 with ground-breaking shows such as Innocent Times and The Coconuts, M-Net once again offers a first for South African television.

Clipz, a brand new, innovative M-Net Original Production is a weekly 24-minute collection of the best clips and videos doing the rounds on e-mail and the worldwide web from one week to the next. Viewers will be able to see all those funnies that had people talking, laughing or hitting the “forward” button.

Presented by 94.7’s Darren “Whackhead” Simpson, who M-Net viewers got to know and love in the ever-popular Laugh Out Loud, this pioneering new M-Net show will feature the classic on-line stars that have made the internet famous. The show’s format includes a variety of categories which will allow viewers to witness the mania of bizarre foreign clips and videos that have colonised the public mind.

In the premiere episode of Clipz you can catch The Top 10 list where Darren will be counting down the Top 10 Wipe Outs. These are clips in which people are literally wiped out while doing everyday as well as unusual tasks. Viewers can also look forward to The Truth Revealed, featuring a clip of someone speaking or demonstrating the undeniable truth. In the first episode some rather “candid” wedding vows are exhibited.

An exclusive highlight of the show is What’s on www.mnet.co.za? M-Net has a lot of supporting material for its various shows – which is exclusive to the website. This section of the show previews what is available on-line – this week we go behind the scenes of the M-Net series Life, and showcase cast interviews from Samantha Who.

Throughout the season, Clipz will feature a host of other categories, some hilarious, others completely bizarre, and a little in between! In the feature The Unexplained, Clipz presents puzzling but highly entertaining items of an unexplained and mind-boggling nature, where viewers can guess what’s being shown in the clip. There will also be a Weekly Theme and the first episode will play back a comical selection of animal antics.

Nowadays almost anyone can make a special effects clip and the Clipz segment called Is it Real or Not? is an example of this. It’s almost impossible to tell if what you’re seeing has been fabricated. In the first episode the verdict is out about a rather impressive springboard moment. The Internet has also created a lot of on-line personalities and each week Clipz will introduce a few of them in Internet Celebs. In episode 1 we reintroduce Numa Numa Kid, That Kid from Brooklyn and Star Wars Kid.

The beauty of the net is the way in which it transcends borders, connecting us to foreign cultures. Even so, the meaning of what we are looking at is often lost in translation, so each week the show also brings in a clip from a foreign culture, crazy as it may seem. Naturally, this segment of the show is called Lost In Translation. In episode 1 we have front row seats at a Japanese game show.

Clipz is produced by Don’t Look Down Productions will premiere on M-Net on April 29 at 19h00.Viewers can also have their 15 minutes of fame by submitting their favourite clips to the “M-Web Inbox” on clipz@mweb.co.za.
