BRIT COM ON THURSDAYS (article first published : 2008-03-24)

On Thursday nights from 20h30, DStv subscribers can enjoy the Best of British Comedy on BBC Prime.

Supernova: Swapping rainy England for sunny Australia, Paul Hamilton leaves his dreary job, dreary girlfriend and dreary sex life behind. Hired by the Royal Australian Observatory to be the new gas expert, the geographical shift has Paul loving life again. However, things turn out to be more difficult than he thought. It's not that the job is particularly difficult; it's Paul who makes it difficult. Killing his new colleagues' pet snake, insulting the locals and needing to be rescued from an ill-advised midday walk in the bush isn't really a good way to spend your first day. Could things get any worse for Paul? Will there be any chance of redemption in the Australian outback?

The Catherine Tate Show S2: Catherine Tate, winner of the 2004 British Comedy Award for Best Comedy newcomer, returns for Series Two of her sketch show featuring an extraordinary gallery of comic characters. From Am I bovvered? teenage-nightmare Lauren to the seemingly pleasant 'Cockney Nan', this brilliantly observed series takes characters from everyday life, parodied to the extreme, as the talented actress morphs through ages, accents and wigs.

Extra’s: Bitter, grumpy, sarcastic actor Andy Millman gave up his day job in the hope of achieving fame and fortune. So far he's yet to land a speaking part, let alone saunter down the red carpet to pick up a BAFTA. He remains optimistic however, as rubbing shoulders with the A-list on-set only serves to reinforce his belief that the big time is just a job or two away. If only his agent wasn't so stupendously useless. Prepare for some classic cameo performances as Hollywood's finest go through the Gervais filter and emerge a little... twisted.

Little Britain S2: Bafta-winning comedy sketch show, following the lives of some extraordinary and sometimes sinister folk, such as unconvincing transvestite Emily, incomprehensible teenager Vicky Pollard, and 'Fat-Buster' Marjorie Dawes. It asks 'Just who are Britain? What do they? And why?' Written by and starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, with the voice of Tom Baker.

Hyperdrive: It is 2151 and the British have launched a fleet of spaceships to explore the galaxy in the only way the British can - with a stiff upper lip and regular tea breaks.

The Mighty Boosch S1: Howard and Vince, two workers in a run-down zoo, are often called upon to put their jobs before their pride. That includes dressing up as animals and sitting in cages because their boss, American entrepreneur Bob Fossil, can't afford any real animals. Bizarre but brilliant new British comedy!
