TIME OF THE WRITER (article first published : 2008-01-25)

The Centre for Creative Arts is hosting 11th Time of the Writer international writers’ festival from March 25 to 30. Principal activities take place each evening at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, where international and local authors will read sections of their work and be interviewed by selected hosts, followed by discussion in which the audience is encouraged to participate. Additional daytime activities will take place in and around Durban. The full programme will be announced in mid-February.

Outreach programmes to learners have become an integral part of the festival programme. This year, as the festival falls during the school holidays, learners will be given an opportunity to meet and hear the festival authors at three public venues including at this stage the PINK area (Phoenix, Inanda, Ntuzuma, Kwa-Mashu) and Durban Central. Venues and times will be announced in mid-February.

A central focus of the festival is to develop literary appreciation by encouraging reading and writing, particularly among the youth. Learners are invited to submit material for the short story writing competition to be held in conjunction with the festival. Learners are invited to engage creatively with a theme of their choice.

Entries must be fictional stories and not critical essays and a maximum of five pages (preferably typed or printed) are to be written in English, Zulu or Afrikaans. Illegible entries will not be considered. Submissions (delivered, emailed or faxed) must be made to the Centre for Creative Arts by February 29. No late submissions will be accepted. Delivery address: Centre for Creative Arts, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 4041. Fax: 031-260 3074 or email cca@ukzn.ac.za with “Schools Competition” in the subject line.

Winners will be awarded book vouchers and complimentary tickets to attend the festival on March 28 where they will be handed their prizes. Winning entries will be displayed in the theatre foyer throughout the festival

For more information go to www.cca.ukzn.ac.za or call 031 260 2506.
