SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS SHOW (article first published : 2008-01-25)

While the ongoing writers’ strike in Hollywood has disrupted production of television and awards shows in 2008, M-Net has announced that it has secured the broadcast of the Screen Actors Guild Awards for this year. The show will be broadcast on January 28 at 22h35.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, now in its 13th year, received a waiver from the writers’ guild allowing it to use a union writer to prepare scripted remarks for awards presenters. A similar waiver was not granted to the Golden Globes or Oscars. This year’s ceremony, hosted by Tom Cruise, is set to boast a host of firsts – it is the first awards show to be broadcast in the US this year, the first to be attended by Hollywood’s elite and also the first show not to be picketed by members of the writers’ guild.

M-Net’s Director of Channels Jan du Plessis is pleased that M-Net is able to bring the SAG Awards to viewers this year. “We felt that after the broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards was cancelled, we had to find an alternative awards show fix for our viewers,” he says. “Awards shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes always draw large audiences on M-Net, and once we discovered that the Screen Actors Guild Awards had received special dispensation from the writers’ guild to go ahead, we moved swiftly to secure the rights to broadcast the show on M-Net”.

The 2008 Screen Actors Guild Awards see a number of heavyweights fighting for what could potentially be Hollywood’s best-publicised awards this year, as George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ryan Gosling, Emile Hirsch and Viggo Mortensen vie for the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and Cate Blanchett, Julie Christie, Marion Cotillard, Angelina Jolie and Ellen Page compete for the Female actor award. M-Net channels are well-represented among the nominees, as Desperate Housewives, Entourage, 30 Rock, Ugly Betty and The Office are pitted against each other in the Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy category.

Don’t miss the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Awards on M-Net on January 28 at 22h35.
