ANOTHER GAY MOVIE (article first published : 2007-10-17)

And now for something completely different … Another Gay Movie, a riot of a rude, raunchy romp that, newly released on the commercial circuit, is sure to prove an eye-opener for many and even a source of much awkward discomfort for some.

An outrageously gay and highly risqué variation of American Pie, with four homosexual high school graduates determined to lose their virginity before going to college, this is a shrill send-up that is not for the easily offended .

Prepare for some of the most graphic sex scenes yet seen in a mainstream mall movie. A good few erect penises are on view, as well as many scenes of masturbation, cringe-worthy moments involving a gerbil and also loads of simulated anal sex. There's also a variation on the classic pie scene from American Pie, this time with a quiche.

Plus there are eyebrow-raising scenes in which British TV personality Graham Norton, cast as a Russian teacher with an eye for teen boys, straps himself into a studded-leather get-up, complete with monstrously outsized appendage, then proceeds to – ahem - defecate on to a glass table while a young man watches from underneath it. Nice.

There’s more to squirm over – not least a sequence showing a hairy and chubby Richard Hatch, winner of the first American Survivor series. Playing himself, he coos while being seduced by a dancing teen as he sits naked on a bed. Hatch then stands up to give the audience a full-frontal eye-ful. Eek!

Directed and written by Todd Sephens, Another Gay Movie is a gross-out frolic centring on boy-next-door-type Andy (Michael Carbonaro), who has a bisexual father; hunky and athletic, but poorly endowed Jarod (Jonathan Chase); bookworm Griff (Mitch Morris); and a screeching and gaudy queen, Nico (Jonah Blechman).

As they set out to find some sexual action before parting ways for college, so they encounter not only possible conquests, but also the assorted delights and dangers of sex toys, naughty websites, gay softball matches, steamy bars, toilet cubicle shenanigans and lesbian love nests.

There is no subtlety in anything here, from acting to direction to plot, although one has to admit to having some smiles from references to films such as Carrie, Mommie Dearest and Airport.

All considered, however, this is a monument to overkill and tackiness. One simply has to agree with an overseas critic who observed that Stephens’s film flirts with a new level of distaste that should make even that outrageous master of camp overkill, director John Waters, slightly nervous.

You have been warned! Rating - 3/10 – Billy Suter
