NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. The Pietermaritzburg-based University Film Club is back in action after a break with the showing on October 11 of Three Burials, directed by Tommy Lee Jones (2005). This is his directorial debut and is a stylish and evocative border-Western. When ranch-hand and illegal immigrant Melquiades is shot by border-patrolman Norton, his friend and employer Pete Perkins kidnaps Norton and forces the latter into an extraordinary desert journey in order to bury Melquiades in his native village. Films are shown at 18h00 in the Centre for Visual Arts Lecture theatre in Ridge Road. There is safe parking.
