V FOR VENDETTA (article first published : 2007-09-26)

To be seen in M-Net’s Friday Night Premier slot on September 28 at 20h30 V for Vendetta is directed by James McTeigue and has a stellar cast including Natalie Portman, Hugo Weaving, Stephen Rea, Stephen Fry and John Hurt.

V for Vendetta is a stylish futuristic adventure set in a very different Britain in which a TV worker joins forces with a masked vigilante to overthrow the totalitarian regime in Guy Fawkes style.

It’s 2020, and England is in the grip of a totalitarian regime. Chancellor Adam Sutler has banned most forms of expression and instituted nightly curfews. One night, a young woman (Evey) who works for a TV station is walking home when she is attacked by armed thugs. A masked man comes to her rescue, and dispatches the villains with ease.

Evey discovers that her rescuer is a vigilante who is planning to overthrow the government. “V” invites Evey to join him but the mild-mannered young woman refuses, until something happens that makes her look at her country’s leader in a whole new light. This movie contains action, thrills and food for thought. Viewers may ask themselves questions like, is it OK to blow up a symbolic landmark to make a statement about freedom? Is there a time when acts of terrorism can be justified? Or where can I get a mask like that so that I can play a cool comic book hero
