LATE SPRING (article first published : 2007-09-20)

The Pietermaritzburg-based University Film Club is back in action and this week's film is Late Spring directed by Yasujiro Ozu (1949) to be screened on September 20. This is another of the Japanese master's subtle and moving examinations of family life, and is generally considered to be amongst the greatest of his extraordinary films.

The story concerns the unmarried Noriko who lives in serene contentment with her widowed father, Shukichi, until her well-meaning but meddlesome aunt decides that Noriko must marry.

Filmed in Ozu's distinctive style, this is a humane and gentle film from one of the world cinema's great auteurs. Films are shown in the CVA Lecture Theatre on Ridge Road, Pietermaritzburg at 18h00. Safe parking available.
