PATH TO 9/11 (article first published : 2007-09-20)

M-Net is to screen Path To 9/11 - Part I on September 22 at 01h05. Directed by David L Cunningham, it stars Harvey Keitel, Stephen Root, Donnie Wahlberg and Amy Madigan and offers an unsparing look at the run-up to 9/11, focusing on the Clinton administration, the people who took the Osama bin Laden threat seriously, and the people who didn’t.

This documentary looks at the events leading up to the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. Based on an official report into the attacks as well as other material, the film shows that CIA and FBI agents were aware of the threat that Osama bin Laden posed to America for some 10 years leading up to 9/11. Unfortunately – and tragically – their hands were tied, as some politicians defended the Bin Laden name, others refused to allow agents to capture the terrorist mastermind when they had the chance in 1998, and yet others refused to allow agents to investigate the contents of a laptop belonging to a suspected terrorist taking flying lessons in America.

While President George Bush does not get off lightly, the film takes some real potshots at the Clinton administration, suggesting that the Monica Lewinsky scandal may have distracted the former US President and his aides from the terrorist threat. A controversial and provocative film that has seen many politicians objecting vehemently to the way they have been portrayed, this is one for all history buffs and followers of current affairs.
