NB: as of 23 September 2008, all new artSMart articles are being published on the site news.artsmart.co.za. On August 1 at 20h00, M-Net will screen Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Geoffrey Rush, Ciaran Hinds and Mathieu Kassovitz. When extremist Palestinian terrorists known as Black September kill 11 Israeli members of the Olympic team in Munich in 1972, it unleashes worldwide condemnation – and a revenge attack by a covert group known as Mossad. After getting the unofficial go-ahead from the Israeli government, Mossad head Ephraim recruits five men to track down the masterminds behind the attack. They are intelligence officer Avner, whose wife is expecting their first baby, bomb expert Robert, getaway driver Steve, forger Hans and clean-up man Carl. With the help of a French forger, the men start tracking down the terrorists, a mission that takes them from Paris to Düsseldorf, Beirut to Athens, and London to New York. But as they eliminate terrorist after terrorist, they must deal with their growing doubts that what they are doing is not only wrong, but a colossal waste of time. Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed look at the futility of vengeance was nominated for five Oscars (best director, picture, editing, score and adapted screenplay, but won nothing), two Golden Globes (best director and screenplay) and one Directors Guild of America award (Spielberg), to name but a few.
