“MR BONES 2” PARTNERSHIP (article first published : 2008-08-25)

The SABC and Videovision Entertainment forged a unique alliance with the signing of a groundbreaking deal that will see the SABC acquiring the free television rights to the biggest South African film of 2008, Mr Bones 2 produced by Anant Singh and Helena Spring. The deal also marks the beginning of a unique alliance between the SABC and Videovision Entertainment.

With the benefit of the audience in mind, the SABC has secured the broadcast rights of Mr Bones 2 beginning in April 2010. The important aspect for the SABC is that audiences across all channels, of all ages and race groups respond positively to Schuster’s films.

The rationale for the deal is the phenomenal success of the original Mr Bones film which is the highest grossing South African film of all time, earning more than R33 million at the local box office. Furthermore, Leon Schuster is South Africa’s number one movie star, who attracts a broad demographic and has a loyal SABC audience. Schuster also holds the distinction of having five films in the All Time Top 20 Attendances for films in South Africa – Mr Bones, Mama Jack, Oh Schucks I’m Gatvol, There’s a Zulu On My Stoep and Panic Mechanic.

Mr Bones 2 is a comic adventure with Mr Bones and Hekule (the King of the Kavuki tribe) in side-splitting, hilarious situations. Directed by Gray Hofmeyr (Mr Bones, Mama Jack), the film stars Leon Schuster, Leeanda Reddy (Isidingo), Kaseran Pillay (Going Nowhere Slowly), Tongayi Chirisa and Meren Reddy.

“As the public broadcaster we are always proud to endorse South African talent while remaining commercially competitive. By entering into a broadcast and equity partnership with Videovision Entertainment, the SABC will secure its foothold in the industry. This is a groundbreaking partnership as for the first time, SABC will not just license a film for its first television window, the corporation will also own equity in a film from the production phase thus enjoying the success and international acclaim,” said Group Executive of SABC Content Enterprises, Mr. Mvuzo Mbebe at the signing ceremony held in Durban.

Videovision Entertainment’s Head of Acquisition and Distribution and Executive Producer of Mr Bones 2, Sanjeev Singh commented, “We are thrilled to have concluded this landmark deal with the SABC for Mr Bones 2. This is indeed a historic deal and this is the first time that the public broadcaster has acquired the broadcast rights of a Leon Schuster feature film for a premiere on Free Television.”

Mr Bones 2 will be released at cinemas in South Africa on November 27, 2008, by Videovision Entertainment.
