M-NET HD ON DSTV (article first published : 2008-08-10)

Television – and M-Net programming - has never been this sharp, bright and clear! From August 24 at 19h00, DStv viewers with HD decoders and television sets will be able to enjoy M-Net HD, a brand new enhanced television channel on DStv, propelled by state-of-the art High Definition (HD) broadcast technology

M-Net HD, which will be found on DStv Channel 170, is yet another first for the pay-television operator and promises to seduce the viewer with its superior image and colour quality in true widescreen format.

M-Net’s Director of Channels, Jan du Plessis, says M-Net is proud to be at the forefront of this new development in broadcast technology. “M-Net HD, the continent’s first packaged high definition channel, will brim with top programming, acquired or produced by M-Net in this revolutionary new format. M-Net HD viewers will see all their favourite shows and movies, but in mind-blowing resolution!”

Even though most of the programming on the schedule will be top international series and movies, M-Net recently made South African television history by recording local series in high definition in its cutting-edge new HD studio (Studio 6, formerly the Big Brother House). Now these series will also be broadcast in HD, with the first to be included on the M-Net HD schedule, exciting new game show Power of 10, in which contestants can win a massive R10 million.

The M-Net HD schedule is not an exact enhanced replica of the ever-popular M-Net, DStv Channel 101. It will contain a variety of programming from different M-Net channels – such as M-Net, GO, M-Net Series, M-Net Action and M-Net Movies – and while some shows on M-Net HD will simulcast with other M-Net channels, channel 170 will also boast exclusive material as well as HD versions of shows that have recently been broadcast on M-Net or its channels.

The channel will be a mix of series, movies, sporting action and once-off specials, such as music concerts. As a bonus, some of the programming – mainly movies, series and specials – will also be available in surround sound.

Thanks to HD, wildlife programming will bring viewers even closer to the wonders of Mother Nature. Among the new, exclusive wildlife content on M-Net HD is breathtakingly beautiful documentaries such as Earth Touch (Tuesdays at 19h30).

Season 6 of the fast-paced forensic drama CSI Miami will screened on Tuesdays at 20h30 (simulcast with M-Net, starting August 26) The forensic investigators of CSI New York Season 4 will solve crimes in the Big Apple on Thursdays at 21h30 (simulcast with M-Net, starting August 28)

Other simulcast productions will be the much-awaited new teen drama series Gossip Girl, based on the lives of privileged Manhattan students broadcast on Wednesdays at 18h30 (simulcast with GO, starting September 3). The romantic thriller Moonlight, which is a different take on the vampire legend, will be on M-Net HD on Fridays at 20h00 (simulcast with M-Net Action from episode 2 on August 29).

The entire Season 3 of My Name Is Earl (Season 3), which was broadcast on M-Net earlier this year, will be available in HD format from August 25 on Mondays at 19h00. From August 26 M-Net HD viewers can catch the larger-than-life Christina Applegate in high definition in the hit comedy series Samantha Who (Season 1) on Tuesdays at 19h00. Lost (Season 4), which premiered on M-Net Series earlier this year, will be broadcast on M-Net HD from August 26 on Tuesdays at 21h30. The wicked comedy Reaper, in which a young man gets a boss straight out of hell, will set HD screens alight on Thursdays at 20h30, starting January 28.

M-Net HD will bowl viewers over with a variety of movies with unprecedented image quality. Among the titles that will be on the channel soon are Die Hard 4, Zodiac, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Spiderman, Oceans Thirteen and Shrek the Third.

The full M-Net HD schedule will be available on the M-Net website at www.mnet.co.za, or by accessing the DStv Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) by using the DStv remote control.
