DEFENDING THE PLANET (article first published : 2007-07-1)

Super-charged duo Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert, back by popular demand on the National Arts Festival Fringe in Grahamstown, present the return of their smash hit take on alien abductions, Defending the Planet. If you missed them in this fun show during its previous runs, be sure to catch the zaniest husband-and-wife couple in town in “one of the funniest productions seen in ages” (The Daily News).

You’ll experience a close encounter of the third (or fourth or fifth) kind when Aaron and Lisa pool their formidable talent in one of their most hilarious musical comedies to date, written and directed by Sue Monteregge. The story focuses on a self-help group of victims of alien abductions, formed to examine these and other close encounters of various kinds.

Typical of McIlroy’s and Bobbert’s unique comedic style, Defending the Planet discusses the trauma of victims who have been “probed” by aliens. By means of “case scenarios”, off-the-wall characters and an eclectic range of foot-stomping music, suggestions are made as to how one can deal with an “invasion” and how to avoid falling victim to these outlandish creatures.

Defending the Planet is a must for anyone who has ever wondered about extra-terrestrial activity and above all, enjoys an entertainment of music and laughter. Performances are at the Scout Hall in Grahamstown.
