HANDSPRING FOR GRAHAMSTOWN (article first published : 2000-06-18)

The South African Handspring Puppet Company recently performed in Hanover, Germany, where their latest multi-media offering, The Chimp Project, was the toast of the International Expo's Theatre Festival. Renowned theatre personality Peter Brook was so taken with the company that he invited them to the Bouffes du Nord in Paris. Lucy Neill of the London International Festival Theatre treated the cast to a celebratory breakfast where she also expressed the hope of inviting the company to London. The company then went to Recklenghausen for another round of performances.

The Chimp Project will have its South African premiere during the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown on July 6. Then there is a season in Johannesburg at the Market Theatre which previews from July 12. The official run is from July 18 to August 26.

The production is presented in Handspring's trademark style of mixed media using live actors as well as puppets. It tells the story of Lisa, a city girl who has a flourishing career in television commercials, likes her gin and cigarettes and enjoys the odd bit of porn. The only problem is that she is a chimpanzee and she is approaching into puberty. Although she is well socialised, adept at sign language and communicates well with her minder, Sonja, the downtown flat where they live together has finally become too small. Tadashi Mori, head of a chimp rehab sanctuary in the DRC agrees to take her on condition she is weaned from all her city habits. But Lisa has other ideas!

Directed by Adrian Kohler and Kurt Wustmann, The Chimp Project features Basil Jones, Busi Zokufa, Louis Seboko, Tau Qwelane, Rajesh Gopie, Yvette Coetzee and Fourie Nyamande. The original music score was created by Warrick Sony (of ex-Kalahari Surfers).
