FINAL CUT FOR GRAHAMSTOWN (article first published : 2000-06-12)

Produced by Underdog Productions, The Final Cut is a comedy directed by Tamar Meskin who has worked extensively in theatre both in South Africa and the United States where she won the Jack Nicholson Award for Acting. The hilarious comedy returns to play the Standard Bank National Arts Festival fringe programme in Grahamstown where it premiered in 1998.

Starring busy Durban actors Ben Voss and John Van De Ruit, the play is set at Kingsmead cricket stadium in Durban where South Africa are taking on Australia in the final of the Nelson Mandela Tribute Series. The play revolves around two spectators, one South African and one Australian, who meet each other in the crowd and strike up an unlikely relationship with some hilarious consequences as they come to grips with each other and their views on cricket, women and life.

The audience is also introduced to a few familiar figures from the world of cricket such as commentary duos South Africa’s Trevor Quirk and Peter Bacela as well as Australia’s Bill Lawry and Tony Greig.

The Final Cut has toured extensively throughout South Africa, from the Hermanus Festival to the KZN South Coast, including a critically acclaimed run at Durban’s Kwasuka Theatre, the Hilton Festival and a sell-out return season at the 1999 Grahamstown Festival. It is a feel-good comedy for the whole family that takes an hilarious slog at the world of international cricket and the people who inhabit it.
