THE BOY INSIDE (article first published : 2007-06-16)

On June 23, Action in Autism in association with The Durban International Film Festival will screen the documentary, The Boy Inside at 16h30 at the Kwasuka Theatre in Stamford Hill Road in Greyville.

Producer Director, Marianne Kaplan turns the camera on her 12-year-old son Adam in this powerful documentary about growing up with autism. Adam has Asperger Syndrome, a form of high-functioning autism characterized by socially and emotionally inappropriate behaviour. Unable to socialize normally with his classmates, school is a nightmare for Adam. He is regularly excluded or bullied, and left his last school after a boy pulled a knife on him.

A rare and intimate portrait of an increasingly common form of autism, The Boy Inside follows Adam’s dramatic family life as he struggles against the odds to graduate Elementary school and make sense of bullies, girls and life in the real world.

Tickets R25 from Euphemia Magadla on 083 319 2463 or Liza Aziz on 083 777 4468. Part of the proceeds will go towards Action in Autism.

Action in Autism invites all parents, people with autism, professionals, educators and caregivers to Autism South Africa’s AGM. The meeting will be held at Durban Girls’ High Secondary School Hall, Dartnell Crescent, opposite Greyville Race course in Durban on June 23 from 10h00 to 12h00. Guest speakers for the day will be speech and language audiologist, Kershni Naidoo and occupational therapist Mayes Pillay. Light refreshments will be served. Parents are welcome to bring their children along. Caregivers will be provided and there will also be a jumping castle to keep the little ones happy.
