DURBAN INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL (article first published : 2007-04-24)

This year the Durban International Blues Festival, which takes place from April 27 – 30, promises to be better than ever with top ‘blues’ acts from around SA and Philip Walker, renowned blues guitarist from Louisiana, headlining both of the gala performances.

This year the festival takes place over the Freedom Day/Workers day long weekend from April 27 to 30, which makes the festival accessible to out-of-town visitors wishing to visit Durban for the weekend to enjoy the festival.

The Festival includes two gala concerts (the Freedom Day Blues Concert hosted by Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World and the Blues Summit at the new ICC Arena), Dan Patlansky nightly at 19h30 at the Catalina Theatre, an Acoustic Blues Experience at the Kwasuka Theatre and bands nightly at Wilson’s Wharf.

The first of the two gala performances will be the Freedom Day Blues Concert hosted by Sun Coast Casino and Entertainment World on April 27 at 19h00. The Freedom Day Blues Concert will feature with East Cost Radio jocks, The Boulevard Blues band from Cape Town, the Skokiana Trio, and Maqhinga Hadebe all as supporting acts to the headline act which is the legendary ‘blues’ guitarist from Louisiana, USA, Philip Walker.

There are limited seats in the Marquee on the Sun Deck at Sun Coast Casino and Entertainment World so booking is essential. Tickets R85 are unreserved booked at www.strictlytickets.co.za or by calling 031 305 6889.

The second Gala Performance is the ever popular Blues Summit which features the ‘best of the fest’ and more on the last night of the festival. The Blues Summit is the concert where various top musicians from different genres come together to play the blues along with top blues acts.

Appearing at the exciting new ICC Arena on the last night of the festival will be ‘jazz diva’ Sibongile Khumalo, SA blues supremo Dan Patlansky, violinist Anton Cawthorne-Blazeby, horn players Tom Hare and Jerry Kunene, USA visitor Philip Walker, Richard Haslop, Madala Kunene and many more. Tickets are two-tiered at R120 for the Gold Circle and Bleachers and R85 for the Circle. Booking is essential through www.strictlytickets.co.za or by calling 082 553 5903 or 031 305 6889.

The Durban International Blues Festival is brought to you this year by Durban Africa, the Ethekwini Municipality, the KZN Dept of Arts, Culture and Tourism, The Independent on Saturday, Sun Coast Casino & Entertainment World, Nivea for Men, Wilson’s Wharf and East Coast Radio.
