UMDWEBO MUSIC (article first published : 2006-09-25)

The KwaDukuza Coast will host Umdwebo 2006, a unique lifestyle festival celebrating the art of fine living in and around the coastal town of Ballito, from November 13 to 19.

There is a strong music line-up which includes The Business Connexion Opera Concert to be hosted in the iZulu Theatre by Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom on November 16 and 17. The concert features the world-renowned and internationally-acclaimed Black Tie Ensemble hosted by Mimi Coertse in a programme of well known and famous opera, operetta and musical arias. The Ensemble comprises sopranos Louette Johnston and Bongi Madlala, tenors Dewald Von Solms and Given Mabena, baritones Jonathan Boinamo and Linda Zitha and Veramarie Meyer (mezzo). The programme includes favourite arias from Atilla, La Traviata, Faust, Madama Butterfly, Carmen, I Pagliacci, Rigoletto, Tales of Hoffmann, Merry Widow, Pearlfishers, Marriage of Figaro, Don Carlo, La Boheme, Die Fledermaus, Frühjahrsparade, Student Prince and Vogelhändler amongst others.

The Bollywood Bhangra Beach Bash takes place on the beach at Thompson's Bay on November 19 and will feature a selection of Bollywood-style stars. Picnic baskets can be brought along but food stalls will be selling traditional Indian cuisine among other items. No glass will be allowed on site, and there will be strict access control and tight security around the beach and its perimeter, so that picnic-goers can fully enjoy this magical afternoon.

The ‘Black Tie and Ballroom Gown but NO shoes" Gala Dinner on the Salt Rock main beach on November 19 promises to be a night to remember. A luxurious marquee will be draped in the splendour of a bygone swing era with ambient lights and romantic décor by Kathryn Hulett. A 10 piece swing band will entertain as guests dance the night away, bare-footed and under the stars. A five-course meal, prepared by chef Jacqui Rey will be served on elegant table settings, complimented by a unique selection of wines.

Booking through Computicket. Further festival information from Henk Swanepoel on 082 444 1825, e-mail info@umdwebo.co.za or visit www.umdwebo.co.za
