TIN BUCKET DRUM (article first published : 2006-07-7)

Written and conceived by Neil Coppen, directed by Karen Logan and performed by Ntando Cele, Tin Bucket Drum is playing on the fringe of the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

It deals with a little girl born in a village who has an unstoppable rhythm in her heart. She encounters characters who are good as well as evil and who take us on her journey through life as an outcast, leading to a final eruption into freedom. Karen Loganís direction is outstanding. She brings Coppenís beautiful fable to life with the ingenious use of a table, tin buckets, one scarf and beautiful lighting. A very nice touch is the live musician on stage.

Ntando Celeís performance is outstanding, amazingly disciplined and highly entertaining. Her mobile face can change from an innocent young childís to that of an extortionate politician in an instant. Move over Gcina Mhlope!

Catch this play if you can, wherever you can. Itís the kind of piece that would be perfect for the Edinburgh Festival. Ė Luke Thomas
