MARGATE ARTS FESTIVAL (article first published : 2000-04-17)

Presented by Tourism Margate and sponsored by MTN, the Margate Arts Festival takes place over the Easter holidays, providing a wide-ranging programme of arts and entertainment.

The Ramsgate College Carnival on April 20 at Ramsgate College offers an all-day festival of art which showcases selected artwork from local schools. There will be painting demonstrations and artists will be invited to paint in the wetland. The work of local artists and crafters will be offered for sale. Admission is free. Wimpy Comedy Corner will present Franks Circus Adventure on April 20 on the Margate Beachfront from 11h30 to 12h30. Durban actor Aldo Brincat presents a frantic, fun packed roller coaster ride into the world of crazy magic, boggling mime, riotous juggling, perilous unicycling and clowning, with some odd balloon modelling thrown in. Franks Circus Adventure performed for President Mandela on his 80th birthday in 1996. Admission is free

The Mbango Retirement Village presents:Mbango Groove where a resident group will perform a short programme of songs such as Baubles, bangles and beads, Yes, we have no bananas and other favourites! This will take place on April 20 on the Margate Beachfront from 15h00 to 16h00. Admission is free. Contact Pat Marshall (039) 699-3159.

The Country Lodge will present The Funny Farm Supper Theatre on April 20 this comfortable venue from 18h00 for dinner with the show at 20h00. Back by popular demand, The Funny Farm is an improvised comedy show crackling with wit and vitality. Unlike normal comedy which is scripted and thought about in advance, this comedy is entirely off the cuff (and often off the wall). The performers make up the show as they go along, including a collection of games and skits for which the audience chooses the content. Tickets at R75 include pasta buffet and salads. Little ones will enjoy Monny The Clown presented by MTN Children’s Theatre Land on April 21 on Margate beachfront from 11h30 to 13h30. Monny and friend Wo-Wo while away an enchanting two hours with magic tricks and slapstick comedy to entertain children as well as mums and dads. Monny’s delightful face painting and balloon sculptures are bound to be an attraction. Admission is free.

The MTN Drum Festival presents The Rich Ellis Project on April 21 on Margate Beachfront from 19h00 to 22h00. Rich Ellis, who formed the first drum circle in Durban three years ago, has been drumming, teaching and performing in Durban and most centres around South Africa for 20 years. The Rich Ellis Project play an assortment of percussion instruments such as congas and timbales and guiro (Cuba), goblet shaped Doumbek (Egypt), Gogo bells, sudo brass drum (Brazil), Djembe drum (West Africa). The rhythms produced are a fusion of styles from Latin America, South and West Africa, the Caribbean, Middle East and Western rudimental drumming exercises. Performing will be Umgqumo WeAfrica (Rhythm of Africa), The Roots and Wings Drummers and The Interitmo Drummers who will offer different styles to produce an attractive blend of entertaining rhythmic collages. Admission is free.

Richard Ellis will also present a free drumming workshop on April 21 from 14h00 to 16h00 in the Gamalakhe Library which focuses on simple, basic rhythms, a brief background on drumming cultures and guidance to drumming socially within a group.

The MTN Art Film Festival 2000 will host a midnight premier of the cult movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show on April 21 in the Casino Cinema, Margate, at 23h00. Tickets include a cocktail party prior to the showing. Dress accordingly - prizes to be won for the best dressed couple. Contact Johan on 082 7732663
