SPIER SUMMER ARTS SEASON (article first published : 2006-04-3)

The Spier Summer Arts Season takes place annually from December to March on the Spier Estate in Stellenbosch. It is a non-profit, financially independent cultural project established in 1996 to administer funds raised from the corporate, private and government sectors to present cultural events. Its objectives include delivering excellence and innovation in the arts, showcasing, promoting and developing emerging South African talent, providing opportunities for collaboration with international artists and building new audiences.

Spier’s spectacular natural environment acts not only as a backdrop but as a source of inspiration for the Arts Season. The society and history of the Cape also plays its role as it sits at the confluence of two oceans and at the tip of the largest continent.

Grand Scale performances take place in the 1,100-seater Spier Outdoor Amphitheatre which traditionally presents Opera, Classical Music, Contemporary Music, Musical Theatre and Dance. Using the setting of the Spier Farm as a giant stage, new venues are explored for site-specific theatre, street theatre, poetry/spoken word readings, cultural workshops, visual arts, film and the many crossovers between all the genres.

The season kicks off with a festive feel during the months of December and January with productions for the whole family. Income splits or rentals with independent producers are welcomed for shows in the amphitheatre.

In February, the Spier Arts Summer Season invites Opera, Classical and Dance production proposals.

During March (Music Month), the Spier Arts Summer Season presents the popular African Giants Music Festival of celebrated African musicians in the Spier Amphitheatre. The Spier Discover Stage on the Spier Farm showcases younger talents. Those wishing to take part should send biographies and music. Musical proposals are also welcome.

Throughout the Arts Season site-specific works and cultural workshops are presented, depending on venue availability on the rest of the estate. Please note that these proposals require a full technical layout and budget. Contact leriens@spierarts.org.za if you need to do a technical recce.

Companies/groups/ individuals wishing to submit proposals for performances should send invitations, background , photographs and videos, contact information and a one page synopsis of a proposed project with a rough budget to: Attention : Spier Arts Summer Season – Proposals Team on e-mail : Proposals@spierarts.org.za

Otherwise post to PO Box 138, Lynedoch, 7603. Delivery address is R310 Lynedoch, Stellenbosch, Spier Estate, Ticket Office.
