NAF FILM FESTIVAL (article first published : 2006-03-20)

The National Arts Festival takes place in Grahamstown from June 29 to July 8. (See story in Festivals) The Main film programme is as follows:

The première of Son of Man (by the producers of U-Carmen Ekhayalitsha) and screenings of Oscar-winner Tsotsi, Faith’s Corner and A Boy Named Twist headline a strong South African presence at the Film Festival. On the Wire, Saturday Night at the Palace and My Country My Hat will also get an airing.

The international line-up includes the spiritually uplifting What the Bleep Do We Know? and the Korean Buddhist meditation Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. The contentious recent releases 9 Songs and The Heart is Deceitful above all Things will appear alongside the beautiful Penguin epic The Emperor’s Journey and premières of the Israeli masterpiece Walk on Water and the German award-winner Head On.

Audiences can compare and contrast work by ‘Compassionate Filmmakers’, Ken Loach (Family Life and Ae Fond Kiss) and Rebecca Miller (Angela, Personal Velocity and The Ballad of Jack and Rose); and popular film critic and academic Leon van Nierop will be on hand to lead discussions on some of the screenings.

Booking opens in May. For more information on the National Arts Festival, contact 046 603 1103/1164, fax 046 622 3082 or e-mail: naf@foundation.org.za or visit www.nafest.co.za
