WORDFEST (article first published : 2000-03-13)

WordFest is a new festival that promotes the word-arts in all their diversity. This includes spoken, written, read, recited, sung, published and unpublished words as well as those mixed into images, carved onto sculptures, printed in scripts or on the web as well as appearing in magazines. It provides a venue and home for word-practitioners during the National Arts Festival which takes place at the same time (June 29 to July 9). Writers, publishers, readers and educationists are invited take this opportunity to promote their work.

WordFest works like the fringe. The organisers provide the venues and general publicity and co-ordinate the programme - the rest is up to the individual or group. Open mike sessions will be held every evening for published and unpublished writers. There will be book launches, a Readers' and Writers' Café and WordFest WordWall. Also on offer are creative writing courses, a workshop on writing for radio and a DALRO workshop on royalties and copyright. There’s also story-telling, readings by distinguished writers, publishers' exhibitions, illustrated lectures and exhibitions of MSS and graphic-art

WordFest is a good place to have a table to promote a magazine, new book or journal or to set up a PC to advertise a website. The festival is multi-lingual and welcomes contributions in languages other than English. Last year saw eight languages used. WordFest has a developmental emphasis, hence the number of workshops and courses on offer.
