BLACK MAMBA (article first published : 2005-09-11)

Those who enjoyed Ben Voss and John van de Ruit’s smash hit Green Mamba will get two chances to see Black Mamba, the new two-hander sketch-based comedy satire by these hardworking and talented Durban actor/ writers.

Black Mamba will be performed at the Witness Hilton Arts Festival from September 16 to 18 before it moves to Kwasuka Theatre in Durban for a season from September 20 until October 16. It again stars Ben Voss and John van de Ruit who have written it with Greig Coetzee. Direction is by Murray McGibbon who recently directed Ben and John in Frank&Stein.

This time Ben and John have sharpened their pencils to make Black Mamba more of a biting satire than their previous productions. Whereas Green Mamba was delicious sketch-based comedy, Black Mamba takes the genre one step further and adds an uncompromising sharpness to the sketches – making them more funny, bitingly clever and socially astute as well. A myriad of topical issues are covered making the show bang up-to-date.

Highlights of Black Mamba include a 12-minute illustrated History of South Africa which spans 600 years of conquering and re-conquering; a brilliant quiz show called “The Missing Link”; and a savage “Grilling of the Minister of Health”.

Booking for the Kwasuka season is through Computicket or Ben on 083 555 1885. Hilton Festival Booking Kits can also be collected from Exclusive Books (La Lucia, Pavilion and Gateway), Adams in Musgrave Centre and town, Shooters and Shuters and the Witness offices in Pietermaritzburg.
