GREIG AT NAF (article first published : 2005-07-4)

Greig Coetzee has decided to take the revived production of his long-standing and multi-award winning White Men With Weapons to the Grahamstown festival to mark the tenth anniversary of its first performance there in 1995.

Also at the festival is his latest play, Johnny Boskak Is Feeling Funny. “It is quite apt that the two plays should be performed in tandem, as Johnny Boskak is based on a character from White Men,” he says. Greig has ventured into new territory with Johnny Boskak as he has written the entire piece in a rap-style rhyme and describes the piece as a “cross between a Road Movie and a Rock Opera.” The production now includes Durban’s guitar wizard, Syd Kitchen who has composed original music, which he plays live on stage as a ‘soundtrack’ to Coetzee’s performance.

Greig’s comedy drama, Banana Republic, received a Sony Radio Academy Award at a recent Award Ceremony in London. The drama was aired on BBC Radio 4 during April last year when he performed alongside Tracy Ann Oberman, a star on the British soap opera Eastenders.

Banana Republic received the third prize in the category Best Radio Drama of 2004, a significant achievement given the huge number of radio dramas broadcast throughout the UK over a year.

Greig is experiencing a year of international success, having completed a tour of Singapore and the UK with his stage hit, White Men With Weapons which will tour Australia in September/October.
