WIRED AT OPPIKOPPI (article first published : 2005-06-20)

OppiKoppi’s 11th event is to be presented by Levi’s ®t from August 6 to 8 just outside Northam, in the Limpopo province.

OppiKoppi was not planned to become what it has. The dusty smattering of around 1,500 people gathering haphazardly around the single stage in 1995 was there for one reason only: bushveld-music-hedonism, say the organisers!

“However over the years the festival has grown from its wild rock ‘n roll infancy to a benchmarking South African and international event which plays host to probably the most diverse array of tunes at any single South African festival on an annual basis. Consequently the event results in an annual almost haj-like music pilgrimage around the Women’s Day long weekend, to the farm just outside the one-horse-Limpopo-province-metropolis of Northam. The announcement of the dates for the festival has therefore over the years become akin to a call-to-arms for the OppiKoppi cult to prepare their minds but mostly their bodies for the four-day music-immersion-marathon.”

Looking at the festival planned for 2005 specifically there will be some logistical and genre movements on the recently-erected permanent stages as well as new odds and ends in the offing.

More information on the content of the show will be found at www.oppikoppi.co.za in subsequent weeks. Artist bookings are in full swing and details on the programme will also be forthcoming shortly.

Flea market bookings have opened and queries can be emailed to tes@oppikoppi.co.za or faxed to 014 786 0034. “Any gadgets, trinkets, tricks, t-shirts-of-a-non-bonehead-inclination or schemes loosely of interest to a tune loving audience can be sent through,” says the press release.

Tickets will be sold through Shoprite, Checkers, Computicket and Levi’s Stores in Gauteng at R350 (All ticketing costs included).

More information from Annelie Hoffmann on 012 346 2011 or 083 308 1251, fax 012 460 7431 or e-mail: annelie@oppikoppi.co.za
