The National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, has appointed Melanie Keartland as the Festival Deputy Director.

Melanie takes up the post with immediate effect from the beginning of May 2005, two months prior to the approaching Festival which runs from June 30 to July 9.

"We are extremely delighted with the appointment of this calibre of person," says Lynette Marais, Festival Director. "I have worked with Melanie before when she worked as Technical Manager for the National Arts Festival between 1992 and 1999. She is highly competent and brings her all-round theatrical and eventing experience to take up this challenging post in Grahamstown," adds Marais.

Melanie has a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Art, an MBA from the Wits Business School and has completed MBA elective courses at the UniversitÓ Bocconi in Milan, Italy.

At present her industry affiliations include vice-chair of the Technical Production Services Association (TPSA) with the portfolio of Training and Education, HIV Aids, cross-sector liaison, i.e film, television and performing arts. She is an affiliate member of the Performing Arts Network South Africa, and was nominated as Production Manager of the Year for the 2004 TPSA Awards.

Melanie consults to various companies and organisations and this year she has been the Production Manager for the Standard Bank Values Launch in South Africa and the United Kingdom, with responsibility for the management of personnel, logistics and all technical requirements.

She has worked on a variety of projects on all levels ranging from personnel and technical management, research, strategic marketing, budget requirements to theatrical and lighting design, stage management and operation during a career spanning 18 years. She has travelled the world with various artists and companies working on all levels and has gained invaluable experience that she will be able to use in her new post.
