BAXTER DANCE FESTIVAL (article first published : 2005-05-2)

The Baxter Theatre Centre is calling for proposals for a specially commissioned new 20-minute choreographic dance piece as it launches its first Baxter Dance Festival from August 3 to 7, made possible by the National Lottery.

The Festival aims to provide emerging and established dance companies and choreographers with an opportunity to present their work, whilst striving to nurture and promote dance talent in the Western Cape. It's the perfect environment to experience and see work by established professionals, as well as exciting up-coming dance practitioners.

The festival is welcomed by award-winning, renowned, local choreographers Christopher Kindo, also a member of the Baxter's Artistic Advisory Panel and Alfred Hinkel, Artistic Director of leading Cape Town contemporary dance company, Jazzart.

Alfred Hinkel said that the "FNB Vita Dance Umbrella is more than enough proof that a festival of this nature develops a groundswell of creative work and dance-makers. As Cape Town produces quality dancers, this is the ideal opportunity for dance-makers."

Equally excited, Christopher Kindo said: "Congratulations! Thanks to the Baxter, we will have a dance festival this year! For Cape Town, it is vitally important with the only existing festival being the Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg, which has grown to include international companies. It is very important for this Baxter Dance Festival to include all dance companies, big and small, to participate under one roof. It provides an opportunity to see and share with other dancers and choreographers, the same goal of keeping dance alive and creating new indigenous works with an eye on the global stage."

Baxter Project Manager and organiser of the festival, Nicolette Moses agrees: "We are very excited about this project. The demise of the FNB Vita Dance Indaba has left a huge gap on the Cape Town dance calendar. The Baxter Dance Festival aims to fill that gap and offer this city's dance community a platform to present their work."

The festival will take the form of a Main Programme running from August 3 to 6 and a Fringe Programme on August 7. The Baxter Theatre Centre will provide a production package which includes lighting, sound, technical assistance, publicity, box office facilities, printed programmes and pre-show rehearsal arrangements - making it a "no admin headaches" experience for participating dance groups and companies.

The Main Programme will feature work by established professional companies, as well as the newly commissioned work. This programme will be made up of various works of different lengths and only one new dance work per choreographer may be entered.

The Fringe Programme will run during the day on Sunday, and will include work by youth groups and dance schools, school groups, traditional African dance groups and by choreographers who request that their work runs on this programme for practical or other reasons.

The closing date for applications is May 27 and choreographers are encouraged to send in their submissions early.

To obtain application forms and for further information, contact Project Manager Nicolette Moses on 021 680 3964, fax 021 650 5260, e-mail: nmoses@baxter.uct.ac.za or post to PO Box 297, Rondebosch 7701, Cape Town. Alternatively, online applications can be made by visiting the Baxter Theatre's website at www.baxter.co.za
