WOODSTOCK MUSIC FESTIVAL (article first published : 2004-12-26)

The Nelson Mandela Metro is in for a live music bonanza next year when South Africa’s very own Woodstock Music Festival comes to Port Elizabeth. The event will take place at the Beachview resort from May 26 to 29, 2005, and will showcase over fifty different South African rock and pop bands.

"We have created a landmark music event with extraordinary artists, demos and extreme displays," says Neill Hodgskin from Netshomi Events, the event's producer. "All of us associated with the festival are thrilled to be hosting this rededication of the most famous music event in the world in Port Elizabeth."

A half million people came to the original Woodstock event back in August 1969 to share good vibes, peace and music in the pouring rain. The original three-day concert, arguably the music event of the '60s, featured performances by Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Grateful Dead and dozens more.

For the past six years, Gauteng has embraced Woodstock and this has been the annual highlight for thousands of festival lovers. Next year is no different and the Eastern Cape gets their chance as Woodstock Nelson Mandela Bay will prove to be better than ever. It's not just about the music. Woodstock is a combination of local people, local music, local sport and all round local fun!

Now in its sixth year, Woodstock South Africa has featured some of South Africa's top core-sport athletes. Visitors will camp for the weekend and enjoy the newly upgraded and revamped Beachview resort with its own beach, ideal for water sport and bathing, fantastic camping facilities, most with electricity and braai facilities, shade, running water, hygienic ablutions, onsite security, life savers and medical facilities.

More crowd participation can be expected with activities such as karaoke competitions, helicopter rides and indulging in cocktails at a host of local participating clubs and pubs such as Barney’s Beachfront, Tapas Al Sol and Toby Joes with flare barmen and their special style and brand of in house entertainment.

The flea market covers most kinds of interests such as African curios and instruments, henna tattoos, didgeridoos, jewellery, clothing etc.
