QUAVER FESTIVAL (article first published : 1999-09-19)

Celebrate the Durban Botanical Gardensís 150th anniversary with the three day arts event taking place over the Heritage Day long weekend when the area will be transformed into a magical entertainment arena. The Quaver Festival offers an escape from the madding crowd to enjoy the rejuvenating gardens and take in some diverse arts and culture events for the whole family.

There will be a main stage by the lake with a series of live acts. On Friday (September 24) an innovative music concept takes to the stage as Pedro Carlo of Universal offers a platform to exciting new up-and-coming as yet unsigned bands. This means an evening of unjaded eclectic contemporary music with more energy and enthusiasm than experience and a great forum of raw new talent. Saturday (September 25) sees a wide variety of music from contemporary and unusual, to haunting world music. Sunday (September 26) sees the mood change with jazz, classical and folk programmes.

There will be a sophisticated arts, craft, vintage-items and hand-made goods market. Organised by multi-talented Aldo Brincat, the market will offer the best in creative arts for sale and there will be a programme of children's activities to keep the little ones entertained and occupied over the weekend.

As the sun sets, the park will come alive with candles and night-lights to enjoy an evening meal under the stars with live acoustic music. There will be open-air wine tasting sessions so you can enjoy wines with your meal. For those who want to gobble-and-go, there will be food carts and take-aways.

Bring along the family, a deck chair or picnic blanket and enjoy a leisurely full programme of long-weekend events. There will be a nominal charge to enter the Gardens as the Quaver Festival is a fund-raiser towards their upkeep.
