STORYTELLERS NEEDED (article first published : 2004-10-7)

This is a call to all South African storytellers. If anyone has a story to tell, join the 5th Annual Sibikwa Storytelling Festival in Benoni on October 27 to 30.

Sibikwa is once again pleased to announce that preparations for the 5th annual Storytelling Festival are feverishly underway. Some 49 American storytellers of note will kick off the Festival on October 27. The executive director of National Storytelling Network, Ms Nancy Kavenaugh, will lead the delegation of American storytellers from People to People International, a cultural and educational exchange organisation. They will share their storytelling experiences with SA storytellers and investigate how African stories differ from Afro-American stories.

To complete the compilation of the festival programme South African Storytellers are needed. The festival takes place at the Sibikwa Theatre and offers a unique opportunity for cultural enrichment, a spirit of invigoration, opening the doors of communication and passing on oral traditions and customs.

The Festival is a celebration of language, history, culture, music and imagination and the main thrust of this year's festival will be directed specifically towards the crèches, foundation phase and intermediate learners. Workshops, open mic sessions (for all - young and old and the in-betweens) and the by- now- famous Storytelling Competition will add an extra gloss of excitement and involvement.

“The Storytelling Festival is an exciting, colourful and familiar event on our local Theatre calendar and we would like vibrant, expressive storytellers of all languages, cultures and countries to participate," says artistic director Phyllis Klotz.

For information on participating in the Festival contact Linda at Sibikwa urgently on 011 422 359, fax 011 421 2346 or e-mail: sibikwa@iafrica.com
