HILTON MAIN VIRTUALLY SOLD OUT (article first published : 1999-09-15)

The Hilton Arts Festival takes place at Hilton College outside Pietermaritzburg over the coming weekend, September 17 to 19. Most of the main frame productions are sold out but tickets are available, particularly for performances on September 19.

The highlight of the festival is undoubtedly the acclaimed Antony and Cleopatra, Syfrets Private Bank flagship production. Directed by James Whyle and starring Sean Taylor and Jana Cilliers, the play appeared at the recent Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. There are still tickets for the 14h45 show on September 19. This abridged production of Shakespeare’s classic love story by the renowned Take-Away Shakespeare Company combines symbolism, modern costume and traditional language.

Written and performed by Fiona Coyne, As the Koekie Crumbles (see review on this website) is another successful production ex Grahamstown. Seats are still available on September 19 at 17h00. Imagine romantic Kenyan sunsets, wild animals, sophisticated ex-pats sipping their G&Ts? In this wry comedy, Coyne highlights the glamour of old style colonialism. Ralph Lawson directs Coyne in an energetic and superbly witty performance.

South Africa’s top all-female a capella sensation Cutt Glas will perform in Afrikaans as well as English on September 19 at 19h00. Described as “a brand new bilingual extravaganza filled with beautiful music and hysterically funny satirical anecdotes about the famous, familiar, notorious, depressed and obscure.”

Good news for John Vlismas and Gilda Blacher fans is that an extra 100 tickets have been released per show for Venus vs Mars which will have its world premiere at Hilton (suitable for those aged 16 and over). Performances take place on September 18 at 14h00 and September 19 at 12h00. Prepare for battle as two of South Africa's famous stand-up comics face one another for the first time ever on the Hilton stage!
