JOY OF JAZZ (article first published : 2004-08-14)

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Joburg International Festival is about to celebrate its ninth year since its inception with an event that will include artists from over three continents.

On August 27 and 28, the Newtown Cultural Precinct will once again be alive with enthusiastic jazz lovers from all corners of South Africa and the neighboring countries, preceded by a star-studded line-up of international and national talent at the Standard Bank Arena on the eve of the festival.

Internationally acclaimed Earl Klugh will kick off the festival with Mamelodi's son of jazz, Don Laka, setting the mood for what promises to be an inspiring jazz festival. The festival will involve 40 international artists and 110 national artists. Countries such as the United States of America, Israel, Germany and Barbados will be represented by their artists on the nine different stages.

In previous festivals, jazz lovers have been treated to different talents, various styles and origins of jazz music and a range of artists both international and national. Voices and sounds of legends such as Angela Boffil, Spyro Gyra, Judith Sephuma, Donald Harrison, Joe Sample, Kirk Whalum, Jonas Gwangwa, Oleta Adams, Nicholas Payton, Jimmy Dludlu, and Havana Ensemble to name but a few, have echoed around the Newtown Cultural Precinct.

The festival will take place at nine venues in the Newtown Cultural Precinct each with its own theme. The Turbine Hall will feature smooth jazz and R&B with the Newtown Music Hall offering mainstream jazz. Vocal jazz artists will perform at the Market Theatre with Kippies Jazz International next door blazing township smooth jazz. New artists will be showcasing their talent at the Laboratory and Niki's Oasis will feature new jazz. A mixture of poetry and jazz will be showcased at the Horror Café and Shivava, across the road, will host traditional jazz. Finally, guests in the corporate village will be entertained to the sounds of the latest jazz experience.

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Joburg International Festival is co-sponsored by the SABC and Audi Sa and has the full endorsement of the Gauteng Tourism Authority and the City of Johannesburg.
