NATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL (article first published : 2004-07-21)

Over 650 quilters from around South Africa will descend on ICC Durban this week, for the National Quilt Festival 2004 which runs from July 21 to 25.

Apart from showcasing the best quilters and teachers in the country, this Festival is generating interest from quilters abroad who include the event in their “must do” list when visiting South Africa.

The aim is to promote the art of quilt-making as an art and craft form whilst teaching enthusiasts new skills and techniques. It will give a tremendous boost to the quilting industry which is already developing rapidly worldwide.

The Festival, with the theme Celebrations, comprises several components.

There are twelve competition categories, over 64 pre-booked workshops and 15 lectures on offer on every facet of the art of quilt-making, with ten international teachers from USA, Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand. There will be 20 South African teachers.

The public exhibition runs from July 22 to 25 from 09h00 to 20h00 daily, closing at 15h00 on July 25. The exhibition quilts will come from all over South Africa as well as overseas. There will be 650 quilts on display, with over 450 competition categories

The festival incorporates an outreach component designed to include previously disadvantaged male and female sewers. Outreach Workshops have been sponsored and these include a kit, accommodation and transport, meals and a guided tour of the Exhibition.

The Merchants Mall comprises over forty fabric and quilt-allied merchants from all over South Africa.
