GRAHAMSTOWN - WINTER SCHOOL (article first published : 1999-06-27)

The Winter School, a popular event at the annual Standard Bank National Arts Festival, this year features talks on South Africa's history and archeological discoveries as well as the impact of the technological revolution on society.

Three lectures by leading rock art specialist and lecturer, Dr Ben Smith, will explore the development of the rock art heritage. In his talks The San Rock Art of Southern Africa, After the San: The Later Rock Art of Southern Africa and The Rock Art of Central Africa he interprets these monuments to early creativity in Africa.

The recent discovery of a 3,5 million year old ape-man skull and skeleton will be discussed by Dr Ron Clarke from the Wits Palaeo-Anthropology Research Group in From the depths of Sterkfontein: Mysterious History of the Ape-man Skeleton.

In this series of talks, the millennium bug comes under scrutiny in Y2K and Other Tricks the Computer Industry has up its Sleeve, Paul Goodwin provides insight into the nature of the bug, the reason for its occurrence and what can be done to overcome the problem. He will also look at other, potentially more serious, problems that lie ahead.
