CHOCOLATE CLUB GOES TO HILTON (article first published : 1999-08-30)

Diane Brophy of East Coast Radio’s Chocolate Club has put together a Festino Package for the Hilton Arts Festival later this month. For those who have always wanted to get to the annual Festival in Grahamstown or find that even Hilton’s a bit far away, this is a great way of getting to be part of the action while letting someone else handle the hassles of transport, accommodation and ticket bookings. There are 20 available at R575 per person sharing.

Productions include Ian von Memerty’s award-winning Cadenza X-Trav featuring the extraordinary Rory Rootenberg on September 17 at 18h00. The show follows on from the success of Cadenza and is a hugely tongue-in-cheek clever musical send-up. “Think of Nathaniel meets Madame Butterfly, or Julie Andrews meets Dali Thambo meets Pik Botha...!,” says Di.

On the Saturday, September 18, the first production is at 12h00 with As The Koekie Crumbles. Kenya: romantic sunsets, wild animals, sophisticated ex-pats sipping their G&T's. In this wry comedy written and performed by Fiona Coyne, the glamour of old style colonialism is highlighted with exotic travel, intriguing characters and a good old South African who misses Woolies when she settles in Nairobi.

Then there is a choice between Venus Vs Mars at 14h00 with John Vlismas and Gilda Blacher or Antony And Cleopatra at 16h00. Starring Sean Taylor and Jana Cilliers, this abridged production of the Shakespearean classic by the renowned Take-Away Shakespeare Company is full of sex, violence, substance abuse, death and the all-conquering power of human desire. The last show of the day will be McCullough's rock 'n roll sensation Milestones To The Millennium at 20h30.

The final show is on Sunday, September 19 at 10h00 with The Well Being featuring Andrew Buckland and Lionel Newton directed by Lara Foot which offers mime combined with comic dialogue and human sound effects.

There are also 22 places available on the Give-Me-A-Break-Package excursion which costs R475 per person sharing. This takes in Milestones To The Millennium on the Friday at 20h15, with As The Koekie Crumbles at 12h00 on the Saturday and a choice for Sunday of either The Well Being at 10h00 or Venus vs Mars at 12h00.

Accommodation will be in the charming country homestead of Hebron Haven arriving September 17 and departing September 19 on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. A few family rooms are available if you want to make it a girl or guys weekend and if the other person in your life just wants to go with for the fishin' and bowlin' and golfin' it will cost R375. Each couple will receive a basket laden with the finest goods and luncheon vouchers from the Midlands Meander worth R500.
