TIME OF THE WRITER FESTIVAL (article first published : 2004-02-21)

Now in its seventh year this six-day international festival of writers, Time of the Writer, takes place from March 22 to 27 in Durban. The festival will host 20 writers who will appear in presentations, readings, and panel discussions nightly at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. Day activities, seminars and workshops take place at tertiary institutions and other venues; including a workshop for educators; a forum on publishing issues; book-launches; short-story competitions and wide-reaching school visits designed to stimulate a culture of reading and writing.

The 2004 edition of the Time of the Writer will have an All-African focus and include themes relating to the 10 years of democracy in South Africa. The festivalís approach to this milestone includes an exploration of the meaning and implementation of democracy, as seen through the eyes and words of writers. A highlighted component of the festival will be the two-day conference on African Scholarship to reflect on what constitutes excellence in learning and research in Africa.

Confirmed participants include Leila Abouzeid (Morocco); Yvonne Adhiambo (Kenya); Unity Dow (Botswana); Helon Habila (Nigeria); Veronique Tadjo (Ivory Coast); and well-known South Africans Antjie Krog; Zakes Mda; Njabulo Ndebele; Albie Sachs; Elinor Sisulu; Jann Turner, and Pieter-Dirk Uys. A further eight writers are still to be confirmed.

Presented by the Centre for Creative Arts (UKZN) in association with the French Institute of South Africa, the principal funders of the Time of the Writer festival are the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Hivos, Prince Claus Fund, National Arts Council, and the City of Durban.
