AARDKLOP/SABC2 WINNERS (article first published : 2003-12-30)

The winners of the Aardklop and SABC2’s four cabaret and music theatre texts, one in Afrikaans, one bilingual, one multilingual and one in Sotho/Xhosa, were announced recently:

Afrikaans cabaret: Henrietta Gryffenberg’s Swartskaap (with Annie Basson as mentor); bilingual music theatre: Henning Pieterse’s Ystertyd (Rosa Keet, mentor); multilingual music theatre: Alexa Strachan’s My Kroon (Ilse van Hemert, mentor); and Sotho/Xhosa music theatre: Josias Moleele’s Gogo’s Groove (Mark Graham, mentor)

The two winners of the text development project are Ludolf Parker with 36 Plus and Karen van der Vyver with an untitled work. Ilse van Hemert and Marthinus Basson will act as mentors to further develop the texts.

The aim is to align the writers to established mentors and to ensure that the scripts will be developed to their full potential. Aardklop’s basic requirements are that the scripts have to be original and contemporary.

The development of the text does not automatically imply that it will be included in Aardklop’s programme for 2004. Production houses, whether connected to the author or approached by Aardklop and/or SABC2, had to prepare a full budget for these productions, which will be subjected to the usual selection process. SABC2 has the right to decide whether or not the chosen cabaret and music theatre productions will be recorded. After discussions with the individual authors, SABC 2 will draw up individual contracts. Final approval will depend on the budgets submitted.

Aardklop 2004 takes place from September 28 until October 2, 2004.
