LOWVELD NATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL (article first published : 2003-11-9)

With tourism on the rise in Nelspruit and surrounding areas, more and more people are exploring the wonders of Mpumulanga. It is therefore no surprise that the Lowveld is becoming a popular hub to host major annual events and activities, one of which being the Lowveld National Arts Festival 2004.

This brand new Lowveld arts festival, also known as InniBos 2004, is scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 3 in 2004.

"Based on the success recipe of festivals such as Aardklop and the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, the Lowveld is sure to produce a festival equivalent to its national counterparts," says Mathews Phosa, chairman of the Lowveld National Arts Festival Committee.

Although the festival will be promoted as an Afrikaans arts and culture event, a strong Portuguese influence will cater for the neighbouring Mozambique tourists.

"With a source market from mainly Gauteng and Mozambique, we are expecting to attract approximately 50 000 visitors next year. The festival will not only serve as a platform to promote local art and talent, but also as an opportunity to boost the city's economy and create various job opportunities," continues Phosa.

The Lowveld National Arts Festival is expected to showcase over 60 productions in its first year. "We are hoping to provide an opportunity for old favourites as well as an exciting flair of new talent to emerge. We will strive to encourage all members of the community and out lying areas to attend this extremely diverse event," says Phosa.

"With a committed team and a strong business plan in place, we welcome all potential sponsors to support this fantastic event. We believe that our sponsors will benefit from all the exposure gained due to the extraordinary array of entertainment, and expected influx of visitors," concludes Phosa. One of the main sponsors of the event, Emnotweni Casino, has already come on board and once again committed themselves to support a local initiative such as the InniBos National Arts Festival.
